Stop SDK Body Errors Before Another Paid Retry
A broken request is not a model-quality problem
The expensive part of debugging an SDK request is often the experiment after the error. You change three options, resend a huge conversation, switch models, and lose track of which change mattered. Even when rejected requests consume no generation tokens, successful diagnostic calls can quietly add up.
My rule is simple: inspect locally first, send the smallest useful request second, and restore production context last. Fluxo fits that workflow with one key and one base URL, https://api.fluxorelay.com, for Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Kimi, GLM, Qwen, Grok and more. Shared access does not mean every model accepts identical request fields.
Freeze the failing SDK call before changing anything
Save the SDK version, endpoint path, model identifier, HTTP status, response body, and request ID if one exists. Record whether streaming was enabled. A validation error, an unsupported parameter, and a broken event-stream parser need different fixes.
- Disable application-level retries while reproducing a deterministic validation failure.
- Check SDK retry defaults instead of assuming every attempt happens once.
- Replace the conversation with one short, non-sensitive user message.
- Keep the original failing fixture locally, with secrets removed.
Do not rotate credentials or buy more capacity to solve a malformed body. Authentication, rate limits, and payload validation are separate problems. Read the actual error before choosing the next experiment.
Inspect serialized bytes, not your input object
The dictionary you print before calling the SDK is not necessarily the JSON sent over HTTP. Wrappers can insert defaults, rename fields, merge configuration, or serialize nested objects differently. Capture the outgoing request with an HTTP transport hook or a local test server, using your SDK's documented extension points.
Log the method, path, content type, and sanitized body. Never log the authorization header. Remove prompts, tool arguments, attachments, and identifying data before sharing a capture. If you write request.json locally, run python -m json.tool request.json to check JSON syntax without making another API call.
That command cannot validate the endpoint's schema. Valid JSON can still contain messages as a string instead of an array, a token limit as quoted text, or an unexpected field injected by your wrapper.
Reduce the body to one message and one model
Start with the documented minimum for your chosen endpoint: its model field and a short input in the required shape. For a chat-completions endpoint, that typically means a messages array containing a user message. Do not move a body from another endpoint unchanged and expect the SDK to translate it.
Use DeepSeek V4 Flash as one concrete test target if it supports your intended operation. Copy its exact API identifier from the current model listing rather than guessing from its display name. Keep that identifier fixed throughout the schema test.
- Remove tools, response formatting, attachments, and optional sampling controls first.
- Omit optional fields rather than sending null without checking support.
- Verify that nested content objects match the selected endpoint schema.
- Add one removed field back after each successful minimal request.
Separate SDK serialization from relay routing
Replay the sanitized fixture through curl using the same endpoint, credentials, and model identifier. Use --data-binary @request.json and an application/json content-type header. Match the documented endpoint path; do not blindly append another version prefix to an SDK-configured base URL.
If curl succeeds but the SDK fails, compare the actual bodies and headers. If both fail identically, investigate the schema or model capability next. Only then try Claude Sonnet 5.5 to test a specific compatibility hypothesis, not as a random escape hatch.
Restore context only after the cheap test passes
Fluxo bills per real token, including cache reads and writes, with no monthly fee. Track usage from successful tests; do not assume repeated context is free. Restore tools, streaming, and full history separately, with a small documented output limit where supported.
Fluxo works with Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI and any OpenAI SDK, so keep this minimal fixture beside your editor configuration. If you need a clean environment for the exercise, consider creating a Fluxo account. Users also earn a referral share when people they invite pay; keep that separate from debugging cost calculations.
Commit a sanitized regression fixture and assert the serialized shape before deployment. If you still need help, leave a note on the contact page after signing in, including the request ID, SDK version, and minimal reproduction—not your API key.
